Hi, I'm Becca.
Here's my personal story of burnout.
Yes, we're getting into it right away. I'm sharing this with you so you know me as a human first, not just a therapist consultant and coach.
I am a mom to 5 kids, and have worked full time and often been a full time student for much of my adult life. I tend toward high achieving at any cost. I am an expert at ignoring my body and my own needs in an effort to care for others and do the damn thing.
As you can imagine, this catches up with you after a while. I was doing what I thought was my dream job while finishing my PhD and (like many women who ignore their emotions and inner world) I ended up with an autoimmune disease of my very own. I felt like shit. I was so tired, and the job I thought was what I had worked so hard for was not actually all the fulfilling. It was bumming me out and stressing me out more than it should have.
At the same time, I was finishing school. I really thought I needed that PhD (spoiler I do not, nor do you) and trying to keep up with the demands of parenting and trying to parent well. I was bone tired and continued to push through. My body eventually made me stop, and I had to make a change. Many changes actually.
Through my own therapy, and work with functional medicine providers (who prescribed a million supplements) I made a career change that allowed me to have more flexibility to be a person. I finished my coursework but paused my dissertation journey and delegated some household tasks.
Slowly, I began to feel better. I still have to be incredibly mindful about my energy, and what I can actually do vs what I think I should be able to do. I’ve been where you are, and I know it can get better. There isn’t a quick fix. I really wish there was, but the only magic is in the little changes you begin to make day to day to alleviate the burdens on your system.
